In order to provide greater access to theological education for ministry for all the baptized in Regions 4, 5 and 6, the Covenant Cluster Network will:

  • convene the theological education providers within the Covenant Cluster including the colleges, seminaries, campus ministries, synods and synodical non-degree programs, camps and teaching congregations
  • encourage networking among theological education providers by creating the opportunity for coordination, cooperation and/or collaboration among theological education providers

What will theological education look like in the coming decades?

The Covenant Cluster Consultation is an annual gathering that provides the opportunity for coordination,
cooperation and collaboration among the theological education providers in Regions 4, 5, and 6 of the
ELCA. The Covenant Cluster Network bridges a variety of institutions including the formal association of
our seminaries in those regions—Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Trinity Lutheran Seminary,
and Wartburg Theological Seminary—as well as a variety of colleges, lay schools, camps, synods and
other theological education providers.

It is our pleasure to invite you to the ninth annual Consultation, February 20–22, 2014, at Camp Carol Joy Holling, outside Omaha, NE.

The theme for our gathering is:

Many Gifts—No Easy Answers:
The New Context for Theological Education in the ELCA

Working in a consultative style, we will share what is happening in the seminaries, colleges, camps,
synods, and lay schools we serve, share ideas, and build consensus through conversation as we seek to
shape theological education for the foreseeable future. Members of the newly created Theological
Education Advisory Council (TEAC) of the ELCA will join us and gather information as they begin their
work.

Leaders for the event will include:

The Rev. Dr. Rob Saler, Research Fellow and Director of the Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal
Programs at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. Prior to joining the seminary staff, he was
Visiting Lecturer in systematic theology at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and pastor of
Bethel Lutheran Church in Gary, IN. He was previously interim pastor of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in
Merrillville, IN. He received his BA from Valparaiso University, an MA in theology from the Divinity
School at the University of Chicago, and the M.Div., Th.M. and Ph.D. (with distinction) from the
Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.

Dr. Kenn Inskeep, director of ELCA Research and Evaluation, co-author, with Robert Bacher, of
Chasing Down a Rumor: The Death of Mainline Denominations (Augsburg Books, 2005). He has been
with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since 1988 and director for Research and Evaluation
since 1992.

Joining us also will be the presidents of all three seminaries in our cluster: Stan Olson from Wartburg,
Rick Barger from Trinity, and Jim Nieman from LSTC.

We hope you will accept this invitation to participate!
